Your check engine light is on. Now what?

It came on during your drive to work. Maybe your car feels fine. Maybe it's running rough. Either way, you're left wondering: is this serious, or can it wait? And how much is this going to cost you?

That uncertainty is the worst part. You shouldn't have to guess.

You might be noticing:

  • The light is on but your car drives normally

  • The light is flashing (pull over when it's safe; see the FAQ below)

  • Rough idle, shaking, or hesitation when you accelerate

  • Worse gas mileage than usual

  • A smell of fuel or rotten eggs

  • Your car failed a smog check

A code is a starting point, not an answer

When the light comes on, your car's computer stores a trouble code. Maybe you've already had it read and been told which part to replace. Sometimes that works. Often it doesn't, and you're left paying for a part you didn't need while the light comes right back on.

That's because a code tells you what the computer detected, not necessarily which part is bad. An oxygen sensor code can be caused by a vacuum leak, a wiring problem, a fuel issue, or the sensor itself. Finding out which one takes testing.

What happens when you bring your car in

  1. You tell us what's going on. When the light came on, how your car's been driving, anything that changed. Your answers point the testing in the right direction.

  2. Your car's codes and data get pulled, including what the engine was doing the moment the problem happened.

  3. Your car's system gets tested, not just the part. That narrows down what's actually causing the problem instead of guessing from the code.

  4. You see what the tech sees. You get photos and written findings.

  5. You decide what happens next. You'll know what's urgent, what can wait, and what it costs. Nothing gets fixed without your OK.

You know the price before paid testing starts

We start with a free initial check of your concern to see what we can identify and whether further testing is needed. There’s no obligation to proceed.

Level 1 diagnostic testing is $175 for a problem in one primary system that can be consistently tested.

More complex or intermittent problems receive a testing estimate based on what’s involved. We explain the recommended testing and its price before you approve it. If additional testing is needed, we explain why and get your approval before continuing. Repairs are quoted separately.

Why Broadway Automotive

You want your car fixed right the first time, not guessed at. So you only pay for parts your car actually needs, because every repair starts with testing.

When your car needs a repair, you get Original Equipment or Original Equipment Supplier parts whenever they're available. Those are made by or for your vehicle's manufacturer. That can mean waiting a little longer for the part to arrive and a little longer without your car. IIn exchange, you get the part least likely to leave you stranded later. In our experience, aftermarket parts are more likely to fail early, often at the worst possible time, or simply not work as designed and set new faults.

Your repair is backed by a 36-month / 36,000-mile warranty on parts and labor.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep driving with my check engine light on?
If the light is steady and your car drives normally, it's usually safe to drive for a short time, but get it checked soon. Small problems can turn into expensive ones. If the light is flashing, pull over as soon as it's safe and shut off the engine. A flashing light commonly indicates an active misfire that can quickly damage your catalytic converter. Having your car towed is safer than continuing to drive.

The parts store will read my code for free. Why pay for testing?
A free code read tells you which system has a problem. Testing tells you what's causing it. The code is where your answer starts, not where it ends.

What if the repair costs more than my car is worth?
Your car isn't for sale; it's what gets you to work tomorrow. The real comparison isn't just the repair against what your car is worth. It's the repair against what it costs to replace it: a used car with its own history and problems you may not know about yet, plus taxes, registration, and maybe a car payment.

With your car, you already know more of its history. We'll explain what we found, what it'll cost to fix, and any other concerns we spotted. If there are reasons to reconsider putting more money into it, we'll tell you. You'll have the facts to decide whether fixing it or replacing it makes more sense.

Can I wait while my car is tested?
Dropping your car off gets you a better answer. Testing takes focus, and rushing it is how problems get missed. You'll get updates along the way.

Could it just be my gas cap?
Sometimes, yes. A loose or worn gas cap can set a code. If that's all it is, you'll know.
